Matching a Pocket Square to the tie

To match or not to match is one of the most popular questions asked on wearing a pocket square. If you consider yourself fashion savvy, matching a pocket square with your tie is a no-no. A pocket square is meant to complement your appearance, either by contrasting or harmonising your accessories. For instance, if a pocket square has a pattern or print on it, pick a colour from that pallete for your tie.

General rules for pairing a pocket square

Before heading out to purchase one, here are general rules of wearing a pocket square.

Go for any secondary colour of the tie or shirt as the primary colour for your pocket square.

If you opt for a silk pocket square, do not go with anything smaller than 16 inches – 40cmsx40cms - as it will slip and fall inside the pocket.

Match the fold to the occasion. For casual occasions, go for classic flare styles such as the puff or flamboyant fold. For formal occasions, go with two poiunt or flat folds.

You can never go wrong with a white pocket square. They work well with every tie or jacket combo or colour. If you are not sure, go white.

Anytime you want to accessorize with a sophisticated item such as lapels and pocket squares, ensure that they are of good quality. Besides completing a polished look, they also last a long time thus value for money.
